Painting

The painting collection of the JU Museum counts 1400 works of art. The oldest of them date to late 15th century, the most recent paintings are contemporary portraits of the Jagiellonian University professors. The core of the painting collection is made by a number of portraits depicting the professors of the oldest Polish university. The Museum  in possession of 28 contemporary portraits of Cracow's scholars, but also numerous portraits from the 19th and 20th century. This collections of professor portraits is by far the oldest and largest in Poland. The painting department is in possession of a few fine works from the Young Poland period (Malczewski, Mehoffer, Boznańska) and works of foreign artists. The most exquisite of the latter are: a painting of J. Massys – Venus and Amor, a portrait of Joost van den Vondel by Ph. Koninck, or an early work of  E. Delacroix – Ghost of Hamlet's Father.
